Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York Democrats want to redraw congressional districts to gain an edge, but doing so would require a constitutional amendment, according to Spectrum News. That means legislative approval and a public voteāat the earliest, in 2027.
The move is a response to Republican-led redistricting efforts in other states. Proposed legislation would let New York act only if another state redraws maps first. But critics say the process could sideline public input and face legal challenges.
The state constitution bans maps drawn for partisan gaināa rule that already led courts to reject one Democratic map in 2022.
