A free bike rodeo aimed at teaching children essential cycling safety skills is coming to Lyons later this month, thanks to a new partnership between Active People Healthy Wayne and several local organizations.
The 1st Annual Bike Rodeo will take place Saturday, August 23, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at 54 Broad St. in Lyons, running alongside the Lyons Farmers Market.
Organizers say the event will provide a safe space for young riders to practice bike handling and safety in a fun, encouraging environment. Children are encouraged to bring their own bikes and helmets, though a limited number will be available to borrow. Free helmets will also be provided by Wayne County Public Health while supplies last. Helmets are required for all participants.
“This is an opportunity to spark love and interest back into the hearts of our young future riders,” said Melissa Kersten, program coordinator for Active People Healthy Wayne, a division of the Finger Lakes Community Action Program. The event is also supported by the Kiwanis Club of Eastern Wayne and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Wayne County.
The rodeo comes as the Town of Lyons continues to expand its bike-friendly infrastructure with new bike racks and a fix-it station. Organizers hope the event will encourage families to embrace cycling as both a pastime and a viable means of transportation.
Funding for the rodeo is provided by the State of New York’s Creating Healthy Schools and Community Program.
