Yankees shut out by Marlins in second straight loss (highlights)

Less than a day after their worst collapse of the season, the New York Yankees showed little spark in a 2-0 defeat to the Miami Marlins on Saturday afternoon at LoanDepot Park.

New York managed just two hits, both in the first five innings, and went hitless over its final 14 plate appearances. Their best early chance came in the opening frame when Trent Grisham walked, stole second, and tried to score on Giancarlo Stanton’s 111-mph single to left. But Kyle Stowers came up firing and threw out Grisham at the plate to end the inning.

Another opportunity fizzled in the second when Jazz Chisholm Jr. drew a leadoff walk but was doubled off first base on a routine pop-up, killing any momentum. The Yankees’ only other real threat came in the fifth, when Ben Rice doubled and Paul Goldschmidt walked with one out, but Ryan McMahon struck out and Anthony Volpe grounded out to end the inning.

Rookie starter Cam Schlittler pitched well enough to keep the Yankees in the game, allowing just four hits over five innings. Unfortunately, two of those hits were solo home runs by Agustin Ramirez in the first and fourth innings, the only runs of the day. Schlittler struck out six and walked two on 92 pitches.
