The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving fake donation requests claiming to benefit the Ovid Fire Department.
Officials said individuals have received calls or messages asking for money on behalf of the department. These solicitations are fraudulent, and the Ovid Fire Department does not contact people by phone or email to request donations.
“This is a fraudulent solicitation,” the Sheriff’s Office said in an alert issued Friday. “The Ovid Fire Department only accepts donations during special events or if people choose to donate, they would mail it to the fire department directly.”
Authorities are asking anyone who receives a suspicious call to save the phone number and immediately contact 911 to report the incident.
The department urged residents to remain vigilant and reminded the public that legitimate donation requests from the Ovid Fire Department are never made through unsolicited calls or emails.
