Despite a nationwide rollback ordered by the Trump administration, the 988 suicide and crisis line remains active for LGBTQ+ youth in the Finger Lakes, according to RochesterFirst. The cut took effect July 17 but does not impact New York due to state funding and independent operation through Goodwill of the Finger Lakes.
Local mental health leaders stress that LGBTQ+ youth—who face significantly higher suicide risk—still have 24/7 access to call support, and text support daily. Advocates warn that removing national access sends a harmful message to vulnerable populations.
Officials say New York’s $60 million in 988 funding will help protect services even if further federal cuts are introduced.
