Mets end three-game skid, avoid sweep with win over Reds (highlights)

The New York Mets snapped a three-game skid and avoided a sweep Sunday with a gritty 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Citi Field, thanks to timely hitting, a quality start from David Peterson, and a late spark from Juan Soto.

Peterson continued his strong stretch on the mound, allowing just one unearned run over six innings. After a shaky start that included a defensive miscue at first base, the left-hander settled in, retiring 12 of the final 13 batters he faced to keep the Mets in control.

Offensively, New York relied on timely execution rather than power. Tyrone Taylor’s third-inning infield single set up Brandon Nimmo’s RBI knock through the right side. In the fifth, Brett Baty singled and stole second before Luisangel Acuña delivered a go-ahead RBI double, his first extra-base hit in over two months, to give the Mets a 2-1 lead.

Cincinnati tied the game in the eighth against Edwin Díaz, but the Mets answered immediately. Soto drew a leadoff walk, advanced on a Jeff McNeil double, and scored the decisive run by sliding under the tag at home on Luis Torrens’ ground ball.

The Mets (56-44) now sit just a half-game behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East and will look to carry the momentum into Monday’s series opener against the Los Angeles Angels. Frankie Montas will take the mound, with the first pitch set for 7:10 p.m.
