Senate GOP trims Trump’s $9.4B cuts amid backlash

Senate Republicans moved Tuesday to soften President Trump’s request to slash $9.4 billion in approved spending, according to the Associated Press. The revised plan preserves $400 million for a major global HIV/AIDS program, lowering the total cuts to $9 billion.

Facing pushback from moderates and public media supporters, GOP senators also worked with the White House to adjust funding for tribal radio. Still, Democrats slammed the package as a partisan stunt and warned it would undermine future bipartisan budget deals.

With a tight deadline and Trump pressuring senators to fall in line, the bill’s fate hinges on procedural votes and potential amendments before Friday’s deadline.
