While no blooms have been confirmed yet, experts say Canandaigua Lake is primed for harmful algae blooms (HABs) due to ideal weather conditions, according to RochesterFirst.com. Warm water, heavy rainfall, and nutrient-rich runoff are raising red flags for the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association.
Executive Director Emily DeBolt says late July is typically when blooms form, but this year’s early patterns across the region have prompted heightened vigilance. She explained that phosphorus and nitrogen from soil runoff fuel algae growth, especially during hot, calm periods.
Even once blooms appear, wind can shift them rapidly, making them unpredictable. Residents are urged to stay alert, report suspicious water conditions, and help protect lake safety during the peak bloom season.
