New Yorkers applying for Medicaid must provide extensive documentation to prove eligibility, and under President Trump’s new tax and spending law, those requirements are set to become even stricter. The federal changes slash Medicaid funding and mandate twice-yearly eligibility checks and a nationwide work requirement starting in 2027.
Currently, applicants must show proof of identity, income, assets, and in some cases, disability or marital status. This includes bank statements, pay stubs, and personal IDs. Medicaid also reviews three years of financial history to spot unreported income or disallowed transfers.
Assistance is available through NY State of Health and local social services offices. Officials stress acting early and gathering thorough records to avoid delays or loss of coverage.
