The New York Yankees pulled off one of their most thrilling wins of the season on Thursday night, erasing a five-run deficit to beat the Seattle Mariners 6-5 in 10 innings and complete a three-game sweep in the Bronx.
Held hitless through seven innings by All-Star Bryan Woo, the Yankees finally broke through in the eighth when Jazz Chisholm Jr. ended the no-hit bid with a leadoff single. Austin Wells’ sacrifice fly got the Yankees on the board, and Giancarlo Stanton delivered a pinch-hit two-run home run to make it a 5-3 game.
Down to their final outs in the ninth, New York struck again. Trent Grisham singled, Cody Bellinger extended his hitting streak to 15 games, and Wells came through with a two-strike, two-out, two-run single to tie it at five.
In the 10th, Judge lifted a fly ball to shallow center, and Volpe’s aggressive slide beat the tag at the plate, giving the Yankees their fourth straight win and a walk-off victory.
Marcus Stroman battled through five innings, allowing two runs on six hits, while the bullpen held strong outside of a three-run homer in the seventh. Devin Williams tossed a scoreless top of the 10th to earn the win.
Next, the Yankees (52-41) host the Chicago Cubs (55-38) for three games starting Friday night at Yankee Stadium before the All-Star break begins Monday.
