Toxic algae season begins in Cayuga Lake

The first harmful algal blooms (HABs) of the season have been reported in Cayuga Lake, with several sightings added to the Community Science Institute’s database.

Though none have yet been tested for toxins, past data shows most blooms contain harmful microcystin levels. This year, due to high volume, CSI will prioritize testing at 14 key sites, including public swim areas and water sources, while continuing to log all reports.

Experts anticipate a severe season ahead, citing hot, stagnant conditions and nutrient runoff. Community members are urged to report blooms and avoid water contact where blooms are suspected.
