Ithaca to host public info session on flood maps and insurance

Residents of Ithaca and Tompkins County are invited to a public information session on Tuesday, July 15, to learn about recent FEMA flood map updates and how they may impact insurance coverage and property risk.

The event will take place at 6:00 p.m. at Ithaca Town Hall, located at 215 N. Tioga Street. It is open to all City, Town, and County residents and will feature a presentation followed by a Q&A session with Val Van Gorder of Bailey Place Insurance, along with municipal planning staff.

Topics will include how to determine if your property is now located in a floodplain, whether flood insurance is required or recommended, and what flood insurance does and doesn’t cover. The session will also cover insurance options and costs, including renter-specific policies and how to find more information on local flood risks.

The updated FEMA maps may affect both insurance premiums and requirements for many property owners in the area. Attendees will have a chance to get expert guidance and ask questions related to their specific situations.

The meeting will be offered in a hybrid format, with a Zoom option for virtual attendees. A recording will also be posted on the City of Ithaca’s website and YouTube channel.

For more details or questions, contact the City of Ithaca Department of Planning & Development at (607) 274-6550 or email [email protected].
