Seneca County eyes landlord accountability law

Seneca County officials are considering a law to ensure rental properties meet livability standards, according to the Finger Lakes Times. The proposal, still in early discussion, would apply health and safety codes to rentals, aiming to hold landlords accountable through both incentives and enforcement.

The idea emerged from a county committee meeting on June 27 and was supported by several supervisors who acknowledged gaps in tenant protections. Past housing studies revealed landlords may profit by neglecting maintenance, and low-income renters often lack the means to challenge unsafe conditions.

Next steps include reviewing similar laws in other counties, assessing enforcement logistics, and potentially creating support funds for landlords unable to afford repairs—part of a broader push to address the county’s affordable housing shortfall.
