NYSUT slams Regents exams over off-curriculum content

New York’s largest teachers union is calling out major problems with this year’s Regents exams after reports surfaced that some tests included material not covered in the approved curriculum.

NYSUT President Melinda Person said the union heard from educators across the state about off-topic content on the Biology and Earth Science exams, which were administered in mid-June.

“We heard many reports from our members that this year’s Biology and Earth Science exams contained topics and questions with unforeseen, off-curriculum material,” Person said in a statement. “Educators work tirelessly to prepare students for success in accordance with state-approved standards. When tests don’t align with these standards, it creates confusion, undermines confidence, and is unfair to students and educators alike.”

Person described the reaction from teachers as one of deep frustration. “Watching students who have worked hard and prepared throughout the year struggle with off-topic materials is disappointing and frustrating for our educators,” she said.

The union says it is now working with the State Education Department to prevent similar issues in future testing. “We are actively working with SED to ensure this doesn’t happen again and to create better alignment moving forward so every student has the opportunity to demonstrate what they’ve learned,” Person said.

Test results from the June exams are now being released to school districts, educators, and students.

NYSUT, or New York State United Teachers, represents nearly 700,000 members in education, human services, and health care. It is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
