The YMCA of Central New York is reevaluating its safety protocols after a registered sex offender was allowed membership at its Baldwinsville facility, according to CNY Central. Ryan Pontello, 33, now faces multiple felony charges for allegedly luring and abusing a 5-year-old girl offsite.
Despite daily screenings, the YMCA admitted its system failed to flag Pontello, a Level 1 offender considered low-risk. The organization terminated his membership immediately upon learning of his arrest and assured no incidents occurred on YMCA property.
Parents and former staff are demanding stronger safeguards. The YMCA says enhanced training and updated procedures are underway to prevent future lapses.
