Wegmans to launch smart carts at CNY stores

Wegmans is set to introduce smart shopping carts later this month at its DeWitt store, part of a limited pilot across four New York locations. The carts feature touchscreens and barcode scanners to streamline checkout directly from the cart.

Customers will begin testing the new carts starting June 27, with feedback helping shape future updates. The carts aim to modernize the in-store experience following the retirement of Wegmans’ SCAN app, which was discontinued in 2022 due to theft concerns.

The company says the technology could offer a new way to shop if it proves effective and meets customer needs. The pilot will also run at stores in Rochester and Buffalo.
