One dead after vehicle driven into Cayuga Lake intentionally

A woman died early Sunday morning after a vehicle plunged into Cayuga Lake in the Town of Varick, Seneca County officials confirmed.

Seneca County Sheriff Timothy Thompson said deputies responded at approximately 5:40 a.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a vehicle in the lake. When they arrived, officers saw the vehicle sinking about 175 feet from shore.

Witnesses told deputies that the vehicle’s driver had intentionally driven down a dock and into the water. Authorities recovered a female body from inside the vehicle around 9:30 a.m.

The woman’s identity is being withheld pending family notification. The investigation remains ongoing.

Members of the New York State Police and fire departments from Romulus, Varick, and Aurora assisted at the scene.
