Jorbit Vivas’ first MLB home run lifts Yankees to sweep of Rangers (highlights)

The New York Yankees (30-19) finished off a three-game sweep of the Texas Rangers (25-26) with a 1-0 win on Thursday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, thanks to stellar pitching and a milestone moment from a rookie.

Carlos Rodón continued his recent run of brilliance, tossing six scoreless innings in a tight pitchers’ duel against Nathan Eovaldi. Rodón scattered just two hits while striking out eight, lowering his season ERA to 2.88.

The game’s only run came in the bottom of the fifth when Jorbit Vivas launched his first career home run into the right field seats. Eovaldi was strong himself, allowing just five hits over six innings, but Vivas’ blast proved costly.

Mark Leiter Jr. worked around a tense seventh inning with the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second, getting a key strikeout to preserve the lead. Devin Williams followed with a clean eighth, and Luke Weaver capped the win with a flawless ninth for his seventh save.

Next, the Yankees will begin a nine-game road trip on Friday when they open a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. The first pitch is slated for 8:40 p.m.
