The New York Mets (29-20) dropped their third consecutive game on Tuesday night, falling 2-0 to the Boston Red Sox (25-25) at Fenway Park, marking their first three-game skid of the season.
Clay Holmes gave New York a solid start, working around early traffic to keep the game close. He walked two in the first but escaped with back-to-back strikeouts, then was saved in the second by Brandon Nimmo’s laser throw from shallow left to cut down a run at the plate. Holmes settled in, allowing just two solo home runs, one each from Carlos Narváez and Rafael Devers, in six innings of work. He finished with five strikeouts, three walks, and four hits allowed.
The offense couldn’t provide any support. The Mets managed just four hits and were shut out for the third time this season. They went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, continuing a frustrating trend of missed chances. Juan Soto was a lone bright spot, reaching base twice with a single and a walk, though a caught stealing by Francisco Lindor ahead of Soto’s sixth-inning hit killed a potential rally.
The Mets had a brief opportunity after Boston starter Walker Buehler was ejected in the third inning, but couldn’t take advantage against the Red Sox bullpen.
The Mets look to salvage the series finale on Wednesday with Tylor Megill facing Boston lefty Garrett Crochet. The first pitch is set for 6:45 p.m.
