Five graduates join Ontario County corrections after new academy launch

Five new correction officers were sworn into service Monday after graduating from the Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Academy’s first-ever Corrections Academy.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office announced the milestone on May 19, following a ceremony held at Finger Lakes Community College. While the academy is already known for its police training programs, this marks the first time it has conducted a dedicated course for county-level correctional officers.

The inaugural class included recruits from six counties across the Finger Lakes region, representing sheriff’s offices from Cayuga, Ontario, Seneca, Schuyler, Tompkins, and Yates.

Ontario County welcomed five officers into its ranks: Hannah Patrick, Nicholas Natale, Amy Smithling, Michael Wheeler, and Cody Meunier.

“We are incredibly proud of these five individuals who represent the future of our correctional staff,” said Ontario County Undersheriff Michael Rago. “Their dedication and professionalism throughout the academy reflect the highest standards of public service, and we are grateful to have them joining our team.”

The Sheriff’s Office also extended its congratulations to all graduates and thanked those who contributed to the success of the new program.
