Geneva has the New York’s highest per-capita rate of police discipline, particularly for officers failing to perform basic duties, according to USA Today Network report. Out of 84 disciplinary incidents, 60% were due to neglecting responsibilities. One officer alone had seven violations, including leaving a colleague at a violent crime scene.
City leaders attribute the high numbers to transparency and a young, evolving police force. Former Chief Matthew Colton and several officers, including one recently arrested for drug-related charges, have faced disciplinary action.
Officials say oversight and training are improving, with officers now logging over 100 training hours annually.
