Advocates push Daniel’s Law amid budget setbacks

Mental health advocates in New York say changes to involuntary commitment standards fell short in the latest state budget, but see progress with early steps toward Daniel’s Law, according to Spectrum News. The law, inspired by Daniel Prude’s death in police custody, aims to shift mental health crisis response from law enforcement to trained health teams.

The budget includes $8 million for pilot programs and a support center to help localities build non-police response teams. Lawmakers and advocates say more funding and localized efforts are needed to fully realize the law’s vision.

Concerns remain about gaps in aftercare and the continued role of police in some crisis responses.
