High school students from Wayne and Cayuga counties put their environmental science skills to the test during the annual Envirothon competition held April 30 at the Montezuma Audubon Center.
Hosted by the Wayne and Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation Districts, the event challenged student teams to compete in five core categories: Soils and Land Use, Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Wildlife, and Current Environmental Issues. The hands-on contest emphasizes problem-solving and teamwork in real-world environmental scenarios.
This year’s top honors went to the Red Creek Rams, whose team members—Casey Doll, Ethan Haas, Graciana Allen, Natalie Flora, Tiffany Seymour, and alternate David King—earned first place. The Weedsport team, made up of Dexter Barnhart, Alex Musso, Toby Kintzele, Cade Clink, and Sprite Tintzele, finished as runners-up.
Both teams will advance to the New York State Envirothon competition, scheduled for May 28 and 29 at SUNY Cortland.
