Some of the 2,000 New York correction officers fired after an illegal strike earlier this year could regain their jobs, according to Spectrum News 1. DOCCS Commissioner Dan Martuscello confirmed that a grievance process under their union contract has already enabled a limited number to return.
Governor Hochul emphasized these are legal obligations, not acts of leniency. Meanwhile, lawmakers prepare for a pivotal prison reform hearing Wednesday in Albany, spurred by recent inmate deaths and ongoing safety concerns inside state facilities.
The hearing may shape a broader reform package. While Democrats eye parole changes and oversight improvements, Republican Sen. Rob Rolison urges re-hiring more officers, saying their walkout was rooted in the same safety issues now under scrutiny.
