Pete Alonso lifts Mets to walk-off win over Pirates (highlights)

The New York Mets (27-15) battled back for a thrilling 4-3 walk-off win over the Pittsburgh Pirates (14-28) on Monday night at Citi Field, with Pete Alonso delivering the game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.

Facing Paul Skenes, New York struggled to capitalize on early opportunities despite putting traffic on the bases in five of the first six innings. The Mets finally broke through in the fourth when Brandon Nimmo doubled and Jeff McNeil followed with an RBI double to tie the game.

David Peterson matched Skenes pitch-for-pitch, bouncing back after a second-inning homer to retire 10 straight batters. He escaped a jam in the fifth with a key strikeout of Bryan Reynolds, preserving the tie.

Both teams traded runs in a tense seventh inning. Tyrone Taylor’s hit-by-pitch and stolen base set up Luisangel Acuña, whose infield single helped spark a Mets rally. Juan Soto tied it with a groundout, and Alonso’s deflected infield single gave New York its first lead.

After Pittsburgh tied the game in the ninth, the Mets responded. Following an error by the Pirates, Soto singled to set the stage for Alonso’s sacrifice fly that brought home the winning run and sealed New York’s fourth walk-off win of the season.

Box Score

The Mets will continue their series against the Pirates on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. with Kodai Senga set to take the mound against Mitch Keller.
