NYSEG, RG&E remind customers to provide access for mandatory natural gas meter inspections

RG&E and NYSEG are reminding customers that ongoing natural gas meter inspections require access to homes and businesses throughout 2025.

The federally and state-mandated inspections, which are part of routine safety efforts, involve checking for gas leaks and corrosion on indoor piping up to the meter. Approximately 20,000 meters in NYSEG’s service area and 40,000 meters in RG&E’s territory are scheduled to be inspected this year.

“Customer safety is our first priority,” said Chris Hepler, manager of Gas Operations Technical Services for NYSEG and RG&E. “Our inspectors will use gas detection equipment to identify leaks and will perform a visual inspection for corrosion. The process typically takes about 10 minutes.”

If crews detect any issues, the utilities will address repairs at no cost to the customer. Inspections will be carried out by NYSEG and RG&E employees or qualified contractors, who will present green or yellow company identification badges before entering a home or business.

Inspectors are expected in neighborhoods Mondays through Saturdays. Customers unavailable at the time of inspection will receive a card with follow-up instructions and may also be contacted by phone. If repeated attempts to access a meter are unsuccessful, service could be suspended until an inspection is completed, and a $100 fee may apply.
