Millions of Americans will begin receiving Social Security payments for May 2025 this week. The distribution schedule follows the same birthday-based structure used by the Social Security Administration (SSA) each month. Here’s what you need to know about who gets paid first and how much to expect.
May 2025 Social Security payment schedule
The SSA sends payments on a staggered schedule based on the recipient’s date of birth. If you receive benefits, your deposit date depends on when you were born:
- May 3, 2025: Retirees who began receiving benefits before May 1997
- May 8, 2025: Birthdays falling on the 1stโ10th of the month
- May 15, 2025: Birthdays falling on the 11thโ20th of the month
- May 22, 2025: Birthdays falling on the 21stโ31st of the month
If your payment date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, it will be deposited the business day prior.
How much will you receive in May?
Most retirees will receive a payment of around $1,720, which reflects the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) applied at the start of the year. However, the amount varies based on work history and age of retirement:
- Average payment: $1,720
- Maximum benefit: $5,180 (for those who retired at age 70 with maximum earnings)
Payments for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are separate and are typically issued on the 1st of the month.
Need to check your payment?

What if your payment is late?
If your deposit hasnโt arrived within three business days of your expected date, contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213. Delays may occur due to bank holidays or account changes.
