Newark will celebrate its 19th annual “Color our Community Pride Day” on Saturday, May 17, calling on residents, schools, and businesses to help beautify the village through flower planting, litter cleanup, and other civic efforts.
Volunteers will gather at 10 a.m. in the municipal parking lot on the south side of T. Spencer Knight Park, east of Pontillo’s on Route 31, where they will receive their assignments. The community-wide cleanup and planting event will run until noon, covering the canal banks, parks, canal trails, old locks 58 and 59, parking lots, village streets, and other areas in need of attention.
Participants will also work on planting colorful flowers throughout designated village locations. Organizers emphasized that last year’s volunteers “did a terrific job of coloring our community with hundreds of beautiful flowers,” and they are hoping for an even greater turnout this year. Residents are encouraged to clean up and add floral displays to their own yards and storefronts.
Local businesses are backing the effort with special discounts for Village of Newark residents. HEP Sales/North Main Lumber/Builder’s Bargain Outlet is offering 10% off exterior products from May 15 to June 15. Plassche Lumber is giving 20% off all house paint and accessories from May 17 to May 31, and Q’s Power Equipment is providing a $200 Dewalt tool credit with the purchase of any Cub Cadet zero turn ZT2 or higher, available from May 15 to June 22.
To spark even more community spirit, a $200 prize will be awarded to the Newark business and resident with the most colorful natural flower displays. Those wishing to enter must call Robbin Bremer at (315) 331-4770, ext. 106, by 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14. Judging will take place on May 19.
The 2025 Community Pride Day is sponsored by HEP Sales/North Main Lumber/Builder’s Bargain Outlet, Plassche Lumber, Q’s Power Equipment, Newark Rotary Club, Newark Garden Club, the Greater Newark Chamber of Commerce, and the Village of Newark.
