Geneva recreation director announces resignation after 25 years

The City of Geneva’s longtime Recreation Director, David Sharman, will resign from his position effective July 11, after a career spanning nearly 25 years with the department.

City Manager Amie Hendrix announced Sharman’s departure, praising his contributions since he began as a seasonal employee in November 2000 and rose through the ranks to lead the department in 2017. “Dave has played an essential role in shaping the landscape of recreation in the City of Geneva and has been a vital member of our leadership team,” Hendrix said. “I wish him success in his future endeavors and eagerly anticipate what lies ahead for him and his family.”

Throughout his tenure, Sharman was instrumental in maintaining recreational infrastructure, including the Recreation Complex and city parks, and developing programs through partnerships with other recreation providers. The city has initiated the process to find his successor, with current staff members sharing duties during the recruitment period. This search will run concurrently with the search for a new Director of Planning and Economic Development.

Sharman expressed gratitude for his time leading the department. “I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity to contribute to the growth and enhancement of our beloved parks and recreation programs,” he said. “Working alongside such a passionate, hardworking, and talented team has been a privilege. Together, we have accomplished so much, and I can see so much more to come for the City.”

He added, “As I move forward, I carry with me countless memories. I am confident that the Recreation Department will continue to thrive, creating even more inclusive and engaging, and accessible experiences for our community. My family and I love Geneva. Geneva has a lot of forward momentum regarding city recreation and I know the community will continue to lean into that. I leave with a heart full of gratitude and excitement for what lies ahead.”
