A new initiative to protect Canandaigua Lake is launching with a $10,000 grant from the estate of Jim and Jane Holden. The Canandaigua Rotary Club is directing the funds to the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association to start the Jim Holden Legacy Project.
The project will involve middle and high school students in hands-on water quality monitoring, using professional equipment to study key indicators like pH, temperature, and algal blooms. It aims to foster technical skills and a lasting sense of environmental stewardship.
Organizers say the effort honors Jim Holden’s legacy of service and education, while addressing urgent threats to a lake that supplies drinking water to more than 70,000 people.
