NY Packaging Bill Could Save $1.3 Billion

A new report shows New York could save $1.3 billion over the next decade by passing the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act, according to the Times Union. The bill would mandate companies to cut plastic packaging by 30% and invest in recycling upgrades.

The savings would mostly benefit local governments and private waste firms burdened by the cost of plastic disposal. Advocates say the legislation not only curbs pollution and supports public health, but also eases financial pressure—especially in New York City, which would gain two-thirds of the projected savings.

Despite support from climate leaders, the bill faces industry opposition, with critics warning of higher consumer costs. Lawmakers hope to advance it alongside the NY HEAT Act as part of this year’s climate agenda.
