Pete Alonso’s early two-run homer and a strong outing from Tylor Megill helped power the New York Mets (4-3) to a 5-0 shutout win over the Toronto Blue Jays (5-3) in Friday’s home opener at Citi Field.
Alonso’s opposite-field blast in the first inning, his third in four games, gave New York a quick lead after Francisco Lindor opened the game with a double. Juan Soto and Brandon Nimmo delivered RBI doubles in the sixth to help break the game open.
Megill improved to 2-0 on the season, tossing 5.1 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. After walking two in the sixth, reliever Reed Garrett struck out two batters to escape the jam, and the bullpen took it from there. A.J. Minter and Max Kranick closed out the four-hit shutout.
This three-game series will continue on Saturday at 7:10 p.m., with Griffin Canning taking the ball opposite Chris Bassitt.
