A new program aimed at revitalizing downtown Seneca Falls kicked off Monday evening with an informational session for local business and building owners. The Seneca Falls Downtown Facade and Storefront Revitalization Program, funded by the Bonafiglia Family Foundation, will provide financial assistance for exterior renovations, with the goal of preserving the town’s historic character while enhancing its appeal for residents and visitors.
The meeting, hosted by the Seneca Falls Development Corporation and Insight Architecture, outlined how property owners can apply for grants covering up to 75% of eligible project costs, with awards capped at $150,000 per project. Participants must contribute at least 25% of the total project cost.
Infrastructure updates and ongoing projects

Before discussing the revitalization program, officials provided updates on major projects impacting downtown:
- Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) projects: Town Supervisor Frank Schmitter highlighted ongoing efforts, including the completion of the new recreation center, a kayak launch, and a skate park. Work along the canal corridor is expected to be finished by October. The town is also preparing for museum renovations and infrastructure improvements on Miller Street and Johnson Street to address flooding concerns.
- Comprehensive Plan Implementation: Town officials emphasized efforts to ensure the strategic plan is actively executed. A newly formed implementation committee is prioritizing community projects, identifying funding sources, and improving public awareness.
- “It’s A Wonderful Life” Museum expansion: Renovations on the museum’s 32 Fall St. property are moving into Phase Two, with plans to recreate the historic marquee from the film’s New York City premiere. The museum will also feature an interactive exhibit focused on suicide prevention and a two-story interior redesign. The project is expected to be completed by December 2026, in time for the film’s 80th anniversary.
- Downtown holiday decorations: Organizers of the “It’s A Wonderful Run” 5K and the Bonafiglia Family Foundation have launched an initiative to enhance downtown holiday decorations. They have raised $30,000 so far, with a goal of $100,000 to fund lighting and decorations for the holiday season.
Program details and application process

The Facade and Storefront Revitalization Program will focus on preserving architectural authenticity while improving aesthetics and economic viability. James Reynolds, a representative from Insight Architecture, said the program is designed to make a visible impact on downtown while streamlining the grant application process.
For the first round of funding, $360,000 has been earmarked for properties along Fall Street and in the Second District. Only exterior improvements are eligible in this phase, and priority will be given to projects that enhance the downtown streetscape.
How to apply
- Letter of Intent (due April 7): Interested applicants must submit a preliminary application detailing their project scope and whether they need design assistance.
- Formal Application: Those who submit a letter of intent will be invited to submit a full application, including cost estimates and project details.
- Selection and project implementation: Applications will be scored based on design impact, alignment with downtown revitalization efforts, and financial feasibility. Grant recipients will be announced by mid-year, with project timelines tailored to individual applicants.
Unlike traditional grant programs, funding will be distributed directly to contractors, eliminating the need for property owners to finance projects upfront.
A vision for downtown’s future

During the Q&A portion of the meeting, attendees discussed design guidelines, contractor partnerships, and long-term sustainability of the program. Organizers said they anticipate this will be the first of multiple rounds of funding.
“This is about creating a vibrant downtown that people want to visit and invest in,” an SFDC representative said. “We’re making it as easy as possible for businesses to get involved, and we’re excited to see the impact this will have.”
