Steuben County Sheriff warns of scam targeting registered sex offenders

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office has issued a public warning about a scam in which fraudsters are impersonating law enforcement officers and targeting registered sex offenders.

Sheriff Jim Allard reported that scammers are calling individuals, falsely claiming to be members of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office. The scammers tell their victims that a warrant has been issued for their arrest due to a missed DNA submission and then demand payment through non-traditional methods to have the warrant vacated.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, emphasizing that the Sheriff’s Office does not solicit money from the public to vacate warrants. Anyone who receives such a call is advised not to provide any payment and to report the scam to law enforcement immediately.

Victims or potential targets of fraudulent activity can call 911 or their local law enforcement agency. The scam can also be reported online to the FBI at ic3.gov.
