After stepping in during a 22-day prison worker strike, National Guard members deployed to New York prisons will receive additional compensation, including $2,000 in special duty pay every two weeks and a basic housing allowance.
Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office confirmed the Guard will remain in a support role for now, though numbers will gradually decrease, with only volunteers staying on. The timeline for withdrawal remains unclear.
Military experts highlight the strain such sudden deployments place on Guard members and their families, including uncertainty and mental health challenges. The last National Guard prison deployment in New York followed a similar strike in Elmira, ending with pay raises for correction officers.
