As the unsanctioned prison strike enters its third week, the New York State Correction Officers and Police Benevolent Association blames the state’s correctional system for worsening conditions. Officers demand better staffing and safety measures, particularly in response to the HALT Act, which limits solitary confinement.
Union leaders admit members have lost faith after rejecting a mediation deal with the state. Many officers remain on strike, while those who refused to return to work— including those on medical leave— lost health insurance and risk termination. Officials say staffing shortages began during COVID-19 when hiring stalled for two years.
With the state unwilling to reopen talks, the union remains uncertain about what comes next, warning that tensions are at a breaking point.
