Gov. Kathy Hochul criticized President Donald Trump’s newly enacted tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports, warning they will increase costs for families and threaten New York farmers. She also condemned proposed federal cuts to low-income public schools but did not attend a scheduled rally as corrections officers protested nearby.
Hochul met with agricultural leaders to discuss the 25% tax on imports, including Canadian energy products and a 20% tariff on Chinese goods. Retaliatory tariffs from China, Canada, and Mexico could drive up costs by $1,300 to $3,000 per year for families. Farmers fear losing international markets and struggling with higher expenses.
New York Farm Bureau leaders joined national efforts opposing the tariffs, emphasizing their potential to disrupt exports and harm local agriculture. Labor leaders also called for stronger opposition to federal funding cuts.
