Harriet Tubman Day ceremony to be held at historic Auburn church

The Harriet Tubman National Historical Park will commemorate Harriet Tubman Day on March 10 with a special ceremony at the Thompson Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, the same sanctuary where the famed abolitionist’s funeral was held in 1913. The event, co-hosted by the New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center, will begin at noon and will honor Tubman’s legacy of love, light, and liberation.

The City of Auburn will participate in the ceremony, with officials presenting a proclamation to Tubman’s family descendants. The event celebrates the achievements of the Underground Railroad conductor, who was not only a fearless advocate for freedom but also a champion for women’s suffrage, racial equality, and care for the elderly and infirm.

“It is especially meaningful to hold this event in the very space where Tubman worshipped, advocated for equality, and inspired countless others,” said Ahna Wilson, superintendent of the historical park. “This celebration commemorates her remarkable accomplishments and reinforces the community’s ongoing commitment to preserving her memory and values.”

The church and its adjoining parsonage, which serves as a visitor center, will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 10. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage in activities inspired by Tubman’s activism and to reflect on her contributions. Many are also expected to visit Fort Hill Cemetery, where Tubman is buried.

Harriet Tubman Day marks the approximate birth date of Tubman in 1822 and serves as an annual tribute to her enduring impact on American history.
