State Senator Tom O’Mara is seeking nominations for the New York State Senate’s 27th annual “Women of Distinction” award, an honor recognizing local women who have made outstanding contributions to their communities.
Each year, O’Mara and his Senate colleagues select one honoree from their respective legislative districts. Nominations for this year’s award are open until Friday, March 14, and can be submitted online at www.omara.nysenate.gov.
“The ‘Woman of Distinction’ tribute is a meaningful recognition. I look forward to this annual opportunity to recognize an outstanding area citizen,” O’Mara said. His 58th Senate District includes Chemung, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, and Yates counties, as well as part of Allegany County.
O’Mara encouraged residents to nominate women from all walks of life, including service providers, law enforcement officers, teachers, nurses, business leaders, and other community members who make a significant difference.
Past honorees from O’Mara’s district include Carol Berry, a longtime regional library professional; Virginia “Ginny” Houseknecht, founder of the Southern Tier Parkinson’s Disease Support Group; Beverly “Bev” Stamp, co-owner of Lakewood Vineyards; and Melinda Marquart, the first female Undersheriff of Seneca County.
The awards ceremony will be held in Albany in May.
