Efforts to resolve the ongoing strike by New York state correction officers will begin next week with mediation led by Martin Scheinman, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul. Scheinman has already held preliminary discussions with state officials and the union representing the officers.
The strike, which started at three facilities and expanded to more than 25 prisons, protests unsafe working conditions. Officers demand changes, including repealing solitary confinement reforms and addressing staffing shortages. Despite a court order to end the strike, officers continue their work stoppage.
While the state has made some concessions, the dispute remains unresolved. Scheinman remains hopeful that mediation can open productive discussions to end the standoff.
