Three New York artists, selected as the Canal Corporation’s 2024 Artists-in-Residence, have created works exploring the Erie Canal’s history. Their pieces are now on display at the Everson Museum.
Alon Koppel blends past and present with composite images of the canal, while Clara Riedlinger examines its role in religious movements, including Mormonism and Spiritualism. Her black-and-white portraits evoke 19th-century spirit photography.
The exhibit highlights the canal’s historical impact on settlement and commerce. Riedlinger encourages visitors to experience it firsthand, saying the best way to appreciate its legacy is to “walk along it” and discover it themselves. The exhibit runs until April 27.
