DOJ sues New York over law granting driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced legal action against New York Governor Kathy Hochul, AG Letitia James, and DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder, citing state policies that protect undocumented immigrants. The lawsuit follows similar action against Illinois for its sanctuary policies.

Bondi criticized New York’s Green Light Law, which allows undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses and limits federal access to DMV records. She argued that such policies shield criminals and vowed legal consequences for other noncompliant states.

Hochul and James dismissed the lawsuit as politically motivated, vowing to defend New York’s laws. Hochul postponed a scheduled White House meeting with President Trump but reaffirmed that New York “is not backing down.”
