FEMA has announced two open house events for Seneca County residents to discuss newly revised flood maps and flood insurance requirements. The events are scheduled for Monday, February 10, 2025, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Seneca Falls Community Center, 35 Water Street, and virtually on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, from 3 to 7 p.m. via Zoom.
The new Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) was issued on December 5, 2024, updating the county’s flood risk data for the first time since the 1980s. FEMA, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and local officials aim to inform residents about how these changes could affect their flood risk, insurance requirements, and property values.
Residents will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with FEMA representatives to review preliminary maps, discuss insurance options, and learn about tools to mitigate flood risk. For those who already have flood insurance, FEMA recommends bringing a copy of their policy declaration page.
The updated digital flood maps are intended to provide more accessible and accurate flood hazard information for residents and businesses. Some properties may no longer be classified as high-risk, potentially eliminating federal flood insurance requirements. However, FEMA advises that purchasing flood insurance is still prudent, even in low-risk areas.
For further details or reasonable accommodations, residents can contact Michael Foley at FEMA or visit FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center website at msc.fema.gov.
