Anne Meinig Smalling was elected the 18th chair of Cornell University’s Board of Trustees on February 4. A trustee since 2017, she becomes the first woman and second member of her family to lead the board. Her three-year term will start July 1, succeeding Kraig Kayser.
Smalling, an alumna and prominent university supporter, co-chaired a recent provost search and heads the board’s executive committee. Interim President Michael Kotlikoff praised her deep connection to Cornell, noting her history of leadership and philanthropy.
A third-generation Cornellian, Smalling’s family is one of the university’s top benefactors. Their contributions include a $50 million gift establishing the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering. Smalling, who lives in Austin, Texas, with her family, is CEO of HM International.
