Schumer warns Head Start programs face closure amid funding freeze

New York’s Head Start programs are facing payment delays and technical issues after President Donald Trump froze federal funding in late January, according to Senator Chuck Schumer.

Schumer stated that although a judge blocked the freeze, programs remain unable to access funds, leaving many at risk of closure or staff layoffs. He urged the Department of Health and Human Services to fix the payment system immediately.

Head Start, which serves nearly 800,000 low-income children nationwide, operates on thin margins. Schumer emphasized the urgency of restoring funding to prevent disruptions in childcare services critical to families and communities.
