Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps adds more bald eagle excursions after high demand

Due to overwhelming interest, the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps has scheduled two additional Bald Eagle Excursions on Sunday, March 2. Participants can choose between sessions at 10:00–11:00 a.m. or 12:00–1:00 p.m. The half-mile walk will follow the Onondaga Creekwalk and lake shoreline, offering a close look at restored habitats that attract Bald Eagles, waterfowl, and other wildlife in the winter.

During the walk, Audubon NY and Onondaga Audubon staff will guide participants through the ecology of the lake, which is designated an Audubon Important Bird Area. Onondaga Lake supports a range of bird species that depend on its wetlands for food and habitat during the colder months. Along with Bald Eagles, other birds frequenting the area include Common Mergansers, American Black Ducks, Mallards, and Ring-necked Ducks.

“The Bald Eagle Excursions we led in February sold out very quickly and were a huge success,” said Chris Lajewski, director of Audubon’s Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps and Montezuma Audubon Center. Lajewski noted that dozens of Bald Eagles were recently observed at the lake, drawing excitement from the community.

The excursion will take place on a flat, paved trail that may be snow-covered. Binoculars, spotting scopes, and field guides will be available for attendees. Space is limited, and advance registration is required. The event begins near the Onondaga Creekwalk trailhead by Destiny USA in Syracuse.

The registration fee is $10 for adults and $7.50 for children. Visit the Audubon website to sign up for the 10:00 a.m. session or the 12:00 p.m. session. For further details, call 315-365-3588 or email [email protected].
