New law eases gym membership cancellations in NY

A new law effective Feb. 1 makes canceling gym memberships in New York State simpler. Gyms and health clubs must now accept cancellations through various methods and issue refunds within ten business days.

Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized that the legislation aims to end predatory practices like steep cancellation fees and restrictive contracts. Members can also cancel contracts penalty-free within three days of signing.

This change is part of broader efforts to protect consumers and ensure greater financial control for New Yorkers.
