Jeffries urges Democrats to focus amid Trump’s tactics

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries compared his strategy to Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, emphasizing that Democrats will not react to every move by President Donald Trump, who has resumed dominating headlines in his second term. Jeffries said the party will instead focus on issues that matter to the public, particularly economic policies impacting the middle class.

Jeffries and Senate Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Trump’s proposed federal grant freeze, calling it harmful to average Americans. Schumer accused Trump of benefiting billionaires at the expense of taxpayers. New York Democrats echoed this message in district press events.

Though some progressives argue the party’s response has been weak, strategist Eric Koch defended Jeffries, noting Trump’s tactics aim to create distractions. Democrats, he said, must maintain a targeted response.
