IRS expands free tax filing program to 13 states

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

The IRS has broadened its free Direct File tax program to 13 additional states, including Alaska, Illinois, and Pennsylvania.

Initially launched last year, the program offers step-by-step filing assistance and live support in English and Spanish, covering credits like Earned Income, Child Tax, and Retirement Savings Contribution.

Direct File, available online starting January 27, now accommodates more tax scenarios but excludes complex filings.

Alternatively, those with an Adjusted Gross Income under $84,000 can access free federal tax filing through the IRS’s Free File program, which partners with tax software companies. Both programs may have limited support for state taxes.
