The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office has released its December 2024 report, highlighting community outreach events, accomplishments, and year-end statistics as part of its ongoing commitment to transparency and public service.
In December, the office hosted its annual “Shop with a Cop” event, where deputies paired with local children to shop for holiday gifts, wrap presents, and meet Santa at the Throop Fire Department. The initiative, made possible by the Deputy Sheriff’s Benevolent Association, aimed to brighten the holiday season for families across Cayuga County.

Deputies also participated in the 2024 Special Olympics Polar Plunge at Oneida Shores on December 8, raising over $5,000 to support local athletes.
Additionally, Sergeant Adam Bacon visited the Port Byron UPK class to read to students, fostering connections with the youngest members of the community. Sheriff Brian Schenck and Cayuga Counseling’s Heather Petrus also spoke at the Second Chance Act Conference in Philadelphia, sharing the county’s successful strategies for reducing recidivism through jail programs.

Key year-end statistics include 20,316 calls for service, 1,655 traffic tickets issued, and 48 arrests for driving while intoxicated. The Sheriff’s Office reported serving 1,327 civil papers and processing 713 arrestees through centralized arraignment.
Sheriff Schenck expressed gratitude to his staff, emphasizing their dedication to maintaining community safety year-round, and thanked the public for their continued support.
